CHILDREN AND FAMILY URBAN MINISTRIES AT TRINITY UMC, 8TH
AND COLLEGE, DM-Our mission trip close to home. Help the working poor through the following programs located here. Families in this area have low paying and long hour jobs that take them out of their homes and leave their school age children alone. CFUM provides free care before and after school at Trinity UMC. Volunteers are needed at:
BREAKFAST CLUB-M-F 6:45-8:15 a.m. Help serve breakfast and play with the children before school.
THE HAVEN-M-F 3:15-5:30 p.m. After school fun and helping with homework, one-on-one or in small groups, sharing your faith with kids who need some extra tender loving care. This program is short on staff and volunteers nearly every afternoon and on early-out days. It is a year round program. Contact Sandy Drescher for the Trinity programs, 225-3874.
SUPPER CLUB-M-S 4:30-6:00 p.m. A meal is provided six days per week year round to anyone who is hungry. Usually about 90 people attend. Valley serves supper on the second Friday of each month. Volunteers are needed to make and serve the meal. Contact: Sandy Drescher, 225-3874.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY-An ecumenical Christian non-profit housing ministry which provides home ownership opportunities for qualified low-income families; requires the selected family to perform 350 hours of sweat equity; sells houses at no interest; offers families a hand up, not a hand out; completed seven houses for 2004. Ten houses are planned for 2005, 16 houses targeted for 2006; and expansion of the ReStore shop...both in merchandise and hours it is open. Think about volunteering with friends from Valley, the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Volunteers are needed to do construction, painting, working in the ReStore shop. YOUTH AND ADULT MISSION TRIPS-Travel with other youth or adults to do a mission project in another part of the country. Contact: Cindy and Les Ottervanger, 224-6742 (adult) and Jana Clyne, 457-7787 (youth)
FOOD PANTRY-Non-perishable food items or cash donations are collected and taken to the Des Moines Area Religious Councils' Emergency Food Pantry. Contact: Cindy Ottervanger, 224-6742 or Carol Welch, 222-3048.
SEASONAL MISSIONS-The changing seasons bring a number of annual hands-on mission projects. Some of these include Glimpses of Jubilee (Urban Ingathering), the Back-to-School Fair in July and the Thanksgiving Ingathering in November, Thanksgiving baskets in November and Adopt-A-Family gifts to WDM residents. WHEELS-A ministry which provides transportation to church to those who need it. Contact: Tom and Jana Clyne, 457-7787.
VISITATION MINISTY-Calling on people who are unable
to attend church due to age or medical condition. Referral forms
are available in the Church Office. The Ministry meets the 2nd
